Tame Your Computer - A 7 Point Computer Check You Can Do!
Computer Problems? Why not check your computer to see if you can fix it?
 | Don't overlook the obvious... It can be easy to overlook the obvious, but check that the computer is plugged in and that electrical outlet has power. Also check that any surge protector hasn't tripped. |
 | Check those connections... Make sure that all the wire connections in the back and/or front of the computer are secure and fully plugged in (especially the monitor and power cables). |
 | Did you recently install any hardware? Did you recently install any new hardware such as a hard drive, ZIP® drive, CD-R, CD-RW, Monitor, Keyboard, Printer, Scanner, etc.? If so, check all connections, and follow the directions that came with your new hardware to reinstall the hardware drivers. Still problems? You may have a device conflict. Check your hardware documentation for device conflict solutions. Still problems? The hardware itself may be faulty and may require an exchange from the place of purchase. |
 | How old is your computer? Is your computer five or more years old? It's internal battery, which keeps track of the time and critical BIOS and CMOS information may have expired. How will you know? Set the time on your computer, then shut down and turn off your computer. Come back a few hours later and turn the computer on. Does it lose your time settings? If so, contact a computer representative for professional replacement of your internal computer battery and to setup your CMOS and BIOS settings. |
 | Corrupt Files? If you are using Windows 95, 98, or Me (Millennium), run ScanDisk to check your hard drive for any possible errors. If it finds errors, it is usually advisable to have it fix those errors before they grow out of control and cause serious problems. To start ScanDisk, simply click Start, Run, then type Scandisk in the box. |
 | Odd Behavior? Odd or strange behavior could be caused by a virus. Update your anti-virus software data files to the absolute latest version.
